Orkney Skull Splitter

Before I say another word I have to just say wow! This beer is incredible. I picked up the Skull Splitter on a whim because I was running out of options and loved the front of the bottle. I have never had an Orkney Brewery product before, but I can guarantee I will be drinking a lot more in the future. The first thing you notice about this scotch ale is the 8.5% alcohol and, let me tell you, that's the first thing you smell. Once you take your first sniff you get a whiff of pure alcohol...but then you take another and get a truly rich and deep scotch smell. This beer smells like you sniffed scotch and amber ale simultaneously. It has a rich full embodied flavor unlike any beer I have tasted before. I truly have a hard time describing the flavor, but it seems to have a light fruit flavor combined with a darker amber ale. Skull has hints of scotch without being over bearing and the 8.5% does not hit you like most stronger ales. Honestly, it has to be one of the smoothest beers I have ever tried. I would recommend it to dark and light beer drinkers as the flavor is full without being bitter and still retains a shockingly refreshing taste. Unlike my "go to" IPA style this beer isn't just a hop machine, it is more of a classy cigar bar type flavor. I would recommend pairing this beer with a red meat meal as it would complement it as much as a fine Cabernet. As for the color, it is a dark brown with some beautiful red hues flowing through it. It would line up against some of the most impressive beer colors I have ever seen. Overall I would have to say Scotland got this one right and I would give this beer a 9.7/10.
