Spaten Optimator

Spaten Optimator is a doppelbock from Munich Germany, and I am so glad I found it all they way here in Baton Rouge, LA. Tonight I only had enough time to snag one beer, so I only looked at pints. I mostly looked at this one for the low price and the style that gold foil brought to it. After googling and seeing many positive reviews on this beer I decided to give it a try. I have had only one other dopplebock before and it was an excellent flavor, so I assumed this one would be the same, and I was right. This beer is sensational. I took my first sniff of the beer before tasting it (as I always do), and it really has an alarming low fragrance for a beer so dark. Lindsey put it best, it honestly just smells like beer. After I smelt it I was worried I had grabbed a dud and this beer would not be good, then I took my first sip. Wow. This beer has everything you could ask for in a beer. It has perfect texture, amazing flavor without being overwhelmingly bold and a thirst quenching taste that made me sad I didn't buy a full six pack. I honestly tried to come up with something negative to say about this beer because I was shocked at how good it was and couldn't. It has a smooth and consistent flavor all the way down and is packed to the top with a rich malt flavor. The color infused in this beer it one to only be admired for hours. It is a deep chocolate brown that can not be seen through even when shinning a light to it. I honestly think its the darkest beer I have had that is this refreshing and smooth. When I told Lindsey of the flavor and how much I liked it she had already had her sip and the look on her face told me she tasted it too. A beer bought on whim just shot to the top of my list. I would buy it at a bar, again at a store and for a beer loving friend.
