Founders Porter

The Founders Porter ale is a very dark beer most like other porters, but this one is different in the aspect that it is not very smokey. I have had some porters that taste like smoked wood and this one does not have that overpowering smokey flavor. It has a very nice taste, however, I feel it is a little bland. The beer has a good scent, one you would except from such a dark beer, but I am just not getting a full embodied taste that the flavor suggests it has. I got this beer for Lindsey because she was excited to get another Centennial IPA and I thought she should try more beer from this company. While I don't think this is a bad beer, it just doesn't have as rich of a flavor that I was hoping for. Lindsey says "this is very good for the porter style and I would love to pair it with some BBQ or a hamburger." I would have to agree, while this beer is a little underwhelming to me, it would pair very well with a big flavorful meal because it adds a little smoke while not overpowering the taste. I will also say that this beer is extremely dark - almost black - and if you come across someone like Lindsey, who usually strays away from super dark beers, this would be a great one to try.  I don't know that I would get this beer again, but if it was on a menu at a smoke house restaurant I would probably be more inclined to getting it.
